Project Background

Prior to Oracle NetSuite, BSL Oilfield Services was hampered by an outdated system that created operational inefficiencies and errors. It was difficult to accurately track real-time asset inventory or integrate with modern supply chain technologies like RFID, forcing heavy manual effort. Furthermore, the system could not handle Malaysia’s complex tax regulations, leading to compliance risks, customs delays, and the need for additional manpower for manual work and cross-checking—highlighting the critical need for an integrated ERP solution. 

Key Challenges

Legacy System Limitations 

BSL Oilfield Services’ core business revolves around offshore equipment rentals. The legacy system was unable to effectively manage inventory status or track the number of available asset, leading to frequent inaccuracies. Its capabilities fell short in handling complex rental operations, which involved diverse payment structures—including monthly and annual rental fees plus multiple ancillary charges such as maintenance, cleanup, inspection, and other miscellaneous costs. The old system lacked automation and required heavy manual intervention, increasing the risk of errors and inefficiencies.

Collaboration Challenges with an Outdated Platform

The outdated platform could not integrate with critical supply chain and warehouse management technologies. RFID tracking and warehouse management tools remained unsynchronized, forcing BSL Oilfield Services to rely heavily on manual coordination for import/export processes. This created significant delays, wasted operational time, and hampered productivity and responsiveness. 

Complex Taxation and Currency Handling Issues 

BSL Oilfield Services faced major challenges with complex tax regulations, particularly in Malaysia. The legacy system lacked integration with government invoicing and could not handle multiple tax layers—including Sales Tax, Excise Tax, and Import Duties. This led to heavy administrative overhead, higher costs, compliance risks, and frequent port delays from inefficient customs and tax processes, ultimately impacting logistics and customer satisfaction.

This end-to-end compatibility eliminated manual coordination for import/export processes, streamlining logistics and reducing operational delays.

The implementation of Oracle NetSuite ERP automated many previously manual and repetitive tasks, such as rental invoicing with multiple payment methods and complex fee structures. This automation saved BSL Oilfield Services approximately 10% of operational time, enabling staff to focus on strategic and revenue-generating activities instead of routine data entry and reconciliation.

Oracle NetSuite ERP’s robust financial management capabilities brought automated handling of complex tax structures, including Malaysia’s Sales Tax, Excise Tax, and Import Duties. Integration with government invoicing systems ensured accurate tax calculations and compliance, reducing administrative overhead, minimizing errors, and preventing costly customs delays at ports.

Oracle NetSuite’s unified platform eliminated data silos and manual record-keeping, allowing BSL Oilfield Services to efficiently manage diverse rental fee structures and ancillary charges with precise billing and reporting.
